MAY 27, 2009 - 7:00pm to ~ 8:30pm - Clean & Green: Reducing Our Carbon Footprint.  4th in the series
at the Chelmsford Public Library; the May session was about Recycling and other actions that benefit
the environment and the community.  Our town's Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Almeida gave a
terrific presentation that taught us all a lot we didn't know about what can and cannot be recycled,
and why!  The doorprize was a neat T-Shirt from the Chelmsford Recycling Department, and it was
won by our Chelmsford Telemedia cameraman!  Click here for the night's presentations:

APRIL 22, 2009 - Water Conservation
In April our featured speaker was Todd Melanson, the Environmental Compliance Manager from the
Chelmsford Water District.  Todd presented information with a terrific view of the global water cycle
and our local resources.  Click here to see the PowerPoints:

Water Conservation (Todd M.)

Todd also brought a wonderful selection of informative pamphlets for folks to take home, and he gave
away not one but four door prizes!  Many thanks to Todd and to the Chelmsford Water District.

MARCH 25, 2009 - Composting
In March we learned about the joys of composting!  Phil Jones, from Jones Farm on Acton Road in
Chelmsford, explained some of the science and the reasons behind the methods with  PowerPoint
slides that came from the Department of Environmental Protection.  Phil brought a bowl of "finished"
compost for folks to see and feel; handouts included more information and can be downloaded from
these web links:
www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/cmppstr.pdf
and www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/reduce/composti.pdf

Virginio Mendonca talked about composting too, and also told everyone about running his car on used
cooking oil.  Visit his website at
www.virginiosbackyard.com   Virginio brought a plastic bag full of
scraps as an example of what he composts, and he contributed to the lively discussion and Q&A.  We
also heard from Jennifer Almeida, the town's recycling coordinator, who talked about how easy it is to
compost all year long; she even let us see a home movie of Jennifer feeding and stirring her
compost!  Click
here to download the PowerPoint file.

The doorprize given away at the end of the night was a complete, full-sized compost bin!

FEBRUARY 25, 2009 - Energy Efficiency, Solar PV
Many thanks to those who joined us for the February session.  We learned about how to use online
resources to figure out our carbon footprint, and why it is important that we all work to lower our
negative impact on the environment; we also learned that conserving energy through energy
efficiency can save us money on our monthly utility bills.  [Click
here to download Jean C.'s
PowerPoint - a very large file!]

Our terrific guest speaker, Scott McClintock of
Nexamp Inc., showed us how we can turn our homes
into producers of our own clean energy by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate
electricity.  Folks had plenty of questions for Scott, and he provided an excellent Q&A session
throughout his presentation.

The lucky doorprize winner got to choose between a programmable thermostat and a hand-
crankable, rechargeable flashlight.  Since he already had installed a programmable thermostat at his
home, the winner chose the flashlight.  :)
